At long last they came upon their first torch, a kerosene soaked wick tucked down inside a red wine bottle, the wine bottle sitting in a cage mounted on a pole. Twenty feet off there was another one. Then another. The torches got closer together.

They were climbing up the other side of a steep valley now, the line of torches leading them up to the far edge on a gradual slope.

Nikolai turned at the top of the trail and helped Nora with one hand, hoisting her up the last steep rocky climb. Off to their right the trail emerged into a small copse, but beyond the copse was a grassy field, and at the far side of the grassy field a high rise of long stone steps ascended into blackness. At the base of the steps there was a large campfire set in a ring of stones. And on the steps, a woman in a crimson ball gown lounged, waiting for them.
